  1. Some connections:

Tabu & Lawrence of Arabia: both films demonstrate Europeans' Orientalist ecstasy of domination in the exotic Third World while critiquing the Imperialist project, displaying ambivalent and contradictory impulses within their satisfying cinematic aesthetic, which is a pretty neat trick...

Lawrence of Arabia and Picnic: both films are organized around the male body (bronzed and hairless) as the object of desire--a male body that will be violated and humiliated...

The Circus and Aguirre, Wrath of God: in my remakes, The Tramp and Aguirre swap roles, culminating with Aguirre staggering on the tightrope, crawling with monkeys, and The Tramp staggering on the river raft, crawling with monkeys...

Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
